Investment Banking Rigour for the Lower Middle Market
For business owners in Alberta, the exit landscape is broken. Local brokers lack the technical skills for complex deals, and national firms ignore private exits under $20M. AJS Capital was built to fill that gap.
Jey Arul, Principal Broker
Most business brokers know how to read a spreadsheet. Very few know what it actually feels like to make payroll, scale a company, and finally hand over the keys to a business you poured your life into.
I do, because I’ve lived it.
I didn’t just learn business from a textbook; I learned it in the trenches as a commercial banker, a top-producing broker, and a multi-business owner who has successfully navigated my own exits. When you hire me to sell your business, you aren't getting a theorist—you are getting a seasoned operator who knows how to get the deal done financially, practically, and emotionally.
The Track Record: 25+ Years of Deal-Making
My career has been built on understanding exactly how businesses are valued, financed, and sold:
The Banker: I spent a decade (1998–2008) as a Senior Mid-Market Commercial Banker at BMO. I know exactly how buyers get their financing approved, which means I know how to structure your sale so it actually closes.
The Advisor: I spent a year as a VP of Mergers & Acquisitions at MNP, learning how the "big firms" package deals.
The Broker: In 2010, I brought VR Business Brokers to Alberta. Over the next decade, our office was recognized as the Top Office in the network, and I was named the Most Valuable Intermediary (2012).
The Industry Advocate: I hold the Certified Business Intermediary (CBI) designation and the Business Certified Appraiser (BCA) designation. I helped spearhead the expansion of the International Business Brokers Association (IBBA) into Canada, eventually serving as the President of IBBA Canada.
The Operator: Walking the Walk
In 2014, I decided to put my money where my mouth was. I bought two businesses: Coldwell Banker (managing 40 Realtors) and Davies Property Management. In 2017, I expanded further, opening and operating two ATB Financial agencies in Edmonton.
By 2020, my own companies were growing so rapidly that I stepped away from the VR franchise to focus entirely on being a CEO. Over the next few years, I grew Davies Property Management from 400 doors to over 1,000 units under management.
Then, I did exactly what you are planning to do: I exited. I sold my ATB interests in 2022, and successfully sold both Coldwell Banker and Davies Property Management in 2024.
Why I Am Back in the Trenches (And What It Means for You)
After selling my companies, I spent 2025 traveling and trying to retire. I quickly realized that at 55 years old, I am terrible at retiring. I missed the action. I missed the deals. I missed helping hard-working entrepreneurs win.
So, in 2026, I returned to business brokering with a completely unique perspective to offer you:
The Financial Reality: I know what your business is actually worth, and I know how to defend that value to aggressive buyers and tight-fisted banks.
The Practical Reality: Having scaled operations from 400 to 1,000 units, I know the operational "messiness" of running a real business. We will organize your operations so a buyer sees a turnkey machine, not a chaotic job.
The Emotional Reality: The day you sell your business is heavy. I remember the exact feeling of the "identity shift" when I sold my own companies in 2024. I am here to guide you through the stress of due diligence, the late-night anxieties, and the uncertainty of "what comes next," because I was in your shoes just a few years ago.
You built your business with hard work. You deserve a broker who will sell it the exact same way.
How I Think About Exits
Selectivity Beats Volume
I don’t work with every business or every owner. I choose situations where preparation, discipline, and process can actually produce a better outcome.
Exits Are Engineered, Not Hoped For
Most of the value in a transaction is created before you ever talk to a buyer.
The Process Exists to Protect You
Confidentiality, structure, and control matter more than speed or hype.
We Don’t Replace Your Advisors. We Empower Them.
A successful exit requires a synchronized effort. We act as the "Deal Architect," performing the valuation in-house and coordinating your existing legal and accounting teams to keep the transaction on track.
The Anchor
We don't outsource the math. We perform the Valuation and deal modeling internally, giving you a defensible price based on real market data, not guesswork.
The Conductor
Your CPA and Lawyer are experts in tax and law, but they aren't deal marketers. We manage the data room and deal pacing so your advisors can focus on protecting your interests without being bogged down by logistics.
The Shield
We stand between you and the market. While your team handles the internal details, we handle the buyers—protecting your time and confidentiality until an offer is on the table.
Why Choose AJS Capital
Selectivity: We take on a limited number of clients per year to ensure executive-level attention.
No "Double-Ending": We represent the Seller. Period. We never try to represent the buyer in the same deal to collect two fees.
Confidentiality First: We protect your data, your staff, and your reputation throughout the process.
